It’s been hot , and we haven’t seen a lot of rain, and you’ve probably all seen the stuff on the news about the canals running dry, and while we are short of water the closure of the canals in the West Midlands is being done in a managed way to ensure that we have water reserves and will be able to offer cruising for the rest of the season.
This has all had a bit of an impact on bookings, so we have availability throughout August. If you’ve never tried this before and fancy trying a short break, or a seasoned narrowboater who knows how wonderful our canals are we want you to come and explore the delights of the Grand Union Canal in rural Warwickshire.
For a relaxed weekend you can collect on Friday, wander down through Calcutt locks towards the South Oxford, turn at the turning point just before the locks (which are closed at the moment) and moor up for a drink at the Folly Pub, or maybe a walk up into Napton for a cider at the wonderful Napton Cidery. Next morning pop into the Napton Village Stores for fresh bread, and some home cooked goodies, and then set off back towards Braunston, you can turn left at the iconic Braunston bridge and carry on up to the Wharf Farm Winding Hole, turn there, and then back to Braunston. Stop there for the evening, and then on Sunday a gentle cruise back to Stockton, handing the boat back on Monday morning (or leave it at the end of Sunday if you unfortunately need to be back at work on Monday!) You have only had to tackle a total of 6 locks, which are currently not affected by any restrictions, covered about 30 miles, and enjoyed it all at a different pace of life.
